A paczki (pronounced POONCH-kee) is a traditional Polish pastry that resembles a filled donut but is richer and more decadent. It’s made from a yeast dough enriched with eggs, butter, and milk, which gives it a dense yet soft texture. Paczki are deep-fried until golden, then filled with sweet fillings.
Paczki are traditionally eaten on Fat Tuesday (the day before Lent begins) as a way to use up rich ingredients like sugar and butter before the fasting season of Lent. This celebration is known as Paczki Day in Polish communities.
